Dry Skin - Causes And Home Remedies BY Dr Andrew Napier

Dry skin is a skin deficit in moisture and sebum or oil secreted by sebaceous glands. Due to poor sebum production, the skin fails to lock enough moisture and gets dehydrated easily, resulting in dryness. It acquires a parched, dull look, and cracking, flaking and chapping are the major signs of dryness. It is very sensitive and feels tightly stretched over bones. The dryness is most evident on cheeks, around eyes and corners of mouth where fine expression lines may show up. The causes of dry skin may be listed as follows:

1. Inability of oil glands to lubricate skin sufficiently
2. Heredity
3. Vitamin A and B deficiencies in diet
4. Excessive exposure to sun, wind and cold
5. Excessive use of chemical cosmetics
6. Frequent bathing with harsh soaps
7. Smoking
8. Skin conditions like dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema and seborrhea
9. Hypothyroidism
10. Diabetes
11. Use of certain diuretics, antihistamines and antispasmodic.
